District I - Morgantown
District One Technique Test was held on Friday, November 18, 2022, at the College of Creative Arts, WVU. 35 students participated in the event and successfully passed the test. Participating teachers include Mary Morrison, Karen Taddie, Natalia Liston, Tatyana Heis, and Hooi Yin Boey. 45 students participated in the Fall Festival "Shall We Dance?" on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at the Grand Hall, WVU Museum Education Center. At this event, the students prepared and delivered an introductory speech, as well as performed a dance or dance-inspired piano literature. Participating teachers include Mary Morrison, Karen Taddie, Natalia Liston, Tatyana Heis, and Hooi Yin Boey. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following students participated in The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Exams in December 2022: Caden Yao, student of Akina Kondoh and Natalia Liston, successfully passed Grade 8 Written Theory Exam. Carter Herron, student of Tatyana Heis, successfully passed Grade 10 Practical Exam. Jude Al-Qudah, student of Natalia Liston, was the State Award Winner in Preparatory B Practical Exam as she received the highest marks in West Virginia in 2022. She will perform at the RCM Celebrations of Excellence Recital in March 2023, at Merkin Hall, Kaufman Music Center, New York City. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following students competed in WVMTA Mountain State Competitions in November, 2022, at the College of Creative Arts, WVU: Elementary Piano - 1 st Place: Emma Lu (student of Hooi Yin Boey) 2 nd Place: Xinxi Xu (student of Hooi Yin Boey) Junior High Piano - 2 nd Place: Simon Scanlon (student of Juliana Yap) Honorable Mention: Keely Taylor (student of Juliana Yap) Senior High Piano - Honorable Mention: Callum Lorimer (student of Juliana Yap) Collegiate Piano - 1 st Place: Ryan Walker (student of Lucy Mauro) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Emma Lu, student of Hooi Yin Boey, was selected the 2nd Place Winner in 2022 Elite International Music Competition Elementary Category. She is invited to perform at the Winners’ Recital in May 2023, at Carnegie Hall, New York City. Xinxi Xu, student of Hooi Yin Boey, was selected the 3rd Place Winner in 2022 Elite International Music Competition Intermediate Category. She is invited to perform at the Live Online Winners’ Recital this Spring

The Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the Grand Hall, WVU Museum Education Center. The theme for this year’s event is “World Music.” Technique Test will be held on Friday November 17, 2023, at WVU School of Music, College of Creative Arts. In July, Dr. Peter Amstutz and Dr. Hooi Yin Boey were invited guests at the grand-opening ceremony for the Amstutz Music School in Bangkok, Thailand, founded in his name by the extended family of Peter’s former student and DMA graduate at WVU. At AMS, Peter presented a featured lecture, “In Beethoven’s Footsteps” and gave master classes. They also traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where Peter offered master classes at University College Sedaya International.
